Memory

This simple to use freeware app makes memory defragging a no-brainer. It perfoms the basic task of freeing up RAM, with a simple graphical chart so you can see how much floating memory you've regained (which always makes you feel good).

Memory defragmenters do for RAM what a hard disk defragger does for your disk drive: it reunites small scattered chunks of memory left vacant by files and apps into large, contiguous chunks. This is especially useful on systems with 512MB or more. MemTurno II is perhaps the best and most widely-used memory defragger, and aside from on-demand memory defragging, it also performs cache tuning and allows you to set the depth and frequency of the memory scrubbing. This way you can either recover aggressively, conservatively, or on a fixed schedule.

Another freebie worth checking out is RAMpage, which places a small icon in the system tray to show how much memory is on tap. You can double-click the icon to have RAMpage sniff out and recover memory left orphaned by apps, or set a low-memory threshold at which RAMpage will automatically kick in and set to work. It can even run every time an app exits.
